Important Information for Bulgarian Employees

Salaries are paid monthly in Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Bulgaria is in the process of adopting the Euro, with the transition underway in 2026. International companies often benchmark salaries in EUR. Payroll must be processed and remitted monthly, with income tax due to the National Revenue Agency by the 25th of the following month.

The standard work week is 40 hours (8 hours per day, 5 days a week). Employers are required to maintain working time records. Overtime must be compensated at a premium rate as defined by the Labour Code.

Employees are entitled to a minimum of 20 working days of paid annual leave per year, after completing 8 months of employment. Certain groups (under 18, employees with disabilities over 50%) are entitled to a minimum of 26 days.

Female employees are entitled to 410 days of paid maternity leave, with 45 days to be taken before the due date. Maternity benefit is paid by the National Social Security Institute (NSSI) at 90% of the average daily gross wage for employees with at least 12 months of contributions. After the 410-day period, additional paid leave is available until the child turns two, compensated at a fixed monthly rate.

Fathers are entitled to 15 calendar days of paid paternity leave from the day the child is discharged from hospital, paid at 90% of salary by the NSSI. Eligibility requires at least 12 months of employment. After the child reaches 6 months, the father may take over any unused maternity leave transferred from the mother.

Employees adopting a child under 5 years of age are entitled to 365 days of adoption leave from the day the child is delivered for adoption, with the same social security protections as maternity leave.
